Separation steps usually account for >60% the total production. In this paper, we present the technical feasibility of a separation-less process for methanol production from steel mill off-gases. Advanced reactors that promoting an integrated reaction-insitu separation operation can serve this scope. This modelling study proves the technical feasibility of this concept.

Read the full article here: https://lnkd.in/eeAfySfs

AristEng specialises in providing engineering services to a diverse clientele, including industries, research institutes, universities and project consortia. The SME carries out process design and process optimization, techno-economic evaluations and environmental impact assessments of novel processes and products at any phase of development.

“Our expertise spans across industries such as fuels, chemicals, pharmaceuticals, food or energy. We like to work with emerging technologies and processes, namely CO2 valorisation, plastic recycling or the deployment of electricity-driven technologies in conventional industries. This is our main competence, compared to other engineering firms,” explains Dr Evangelos Delikonstantis, cofounder and Managing Director.

We like to work with emerging technologies and processes.

Evangelos Delikonstantis, AristEng

The company headquartered in Luxembourg has been involved in several projects under Horizon Europe, the EU’s main funding programme for research and innovation. A key part of this programme is the European Innovation Council (EIC), which aims to identify, develop, and scale up breakthrough technologies and game-changing innovations. The EIC has three main funding sub-programmes: Transition, Accelerator and Pathfinder.

EIC Transition helps to validate novel ideas, while EIC Accelerator empowers startups and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) to scale to new markets or disrupt existing ones. EIC Pathfinder supports high-risk, high-reward research and deep-tech projects. Small consortia, typically consisting of researchers and small companies or startups, can apply. Grants are offered under two main categories: Pathfinder Challenges and Pathfinder Open.

Luxinnovation was a great support when we had a lot of questions at the beginning.

“The key difference is that the Pathfinder Open call allows applicants to propose ideas in any technology or innovation area, offering more flexibility to explore different paths. In contrast, the Pathfinder Challenges focus on specific problems or themes identified by the EIC, requiring applicants to align their proposals with these targeted issues,” explains Francesca Borrelli, Senior Advisor – European Funding at Luxinnovation. The national agency operates as the Luxembourg contact point for Horizon Europe.

“Luxinnovation was a great support when we had a lot of questions at the beginning related to management or how to allocate the budget, or anything administrative related to Horizon Europe. The agency helped us to understand the methodology we should apply in order to have a structured and successful proposal, from the Horizon Europe point of view,” says Mr Delikonstantis.

Hydrocool project

Among the various Horizon Europe calls that AristEng has participated in, the Hydrocool project, aimed at replacing conventional cooling systems, stands out.

On the one hand, it is the firm’s first Pathfinder application. “Our goal is to develop a novel cooling system that is able to achieve, depending on the operating mode, cooling duties of up to minus 40 degree Celsius, making it suitable for applications such as food preservation,” specifies Dr Delikonstantis.

It helped us to get out of our comfort zone, expand our portfolio and network, and develop other skills.

On the other hand, it was an opportunity for the company to apply its expertise in product development and innovation. “It helped us to get out of our comfort zone, expand our portfolio and network, and develop other skills. Now we’re shifting from conventional chemical engineering to thermodynamic cooling cycles, mechanical parts and material science, which are all connected to the development of the hydrocool system. So it gives us the opportunity to expand our competencies and knowledge base,” he adds.

In the scope of this project, AristEng led the work package focused on circularity and sustainability by design. Their role involved assessing product design specifications at each development stage to ensure alignment with sustainability and economic viability criteria. By providing feedback and guidance, the company helped the technology developers refine their product to meet necessary standards before market entry.

Leveraging past networks

Previous Horizon Europe projects the company has participated in include Electro (recycling plastic waste into olefins using electrified reactors), Fuel up (enabling a greener aviation and transport sector using sustainable fuel from biomass), Simpli-Demo (strengthening the chemical process industry – and in particular the specialty chemicals and pharmaceuticals industries), and Hyield (Europe’s first industrial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant project).

AristEng’s involvement in the Hydrocool project stemmed from a fruitful partnership with a previous consortium partner. “They had been a close collaborator of ours, and we had already won two projects together that we have been running. They were satisfied with our contribution and performance and invited us to join this consortium,” recalls Mr Delikonstantis.

They were satisfied with our contribution and performance and invited us to join this consortium.

According to him, the success of the Hydrocool project application can be attributed to two key factors. Firstly, the innovative aspect of the technology – the cooling system utilises a piston pump instead of a conventional compressor – significantly reduces electricity demand and enhances system performance. Secondly, the sustainability dimension of the project. “In September, all the partners under the cooling system call category met in Brussels, and based on the feedback we got, our project was the only one that had a complete environmental impact analysis at the proposal stage,” he proudly mentions.

Cascading benefits

Participation in Horizon Europe consortia can lead to other collaborations. “Since EIC Pathfinder often funds early-stage technologies, it creates the need for a holistic environmental impact assessment or techno-economic evaluation. This means there is a possibility that those partners will know ArtisEng. Later on, they could assign us some other job not foreseen in the activities of the Pathfinder proposal, which means that they are potential customers for AristEng,” he notes.

As part of consortiums, the company submitted three new Horizon Europe proposals in September and is now working on four additional applications with a deadline in February 2025.

Dr Delikonstantis advises companies looking to try out Horizon Europe programmes for the first time: “partner with academia, especially universities with a strong Horizon Europe record, for instance from Germany, Netherlands or Belgium. Send an email, introduce yourself and what you do and let them know you are available to become a partner. Take action to spread the word that you want to join the funding schemes of the European Commission.”

We are thrilled to announce the launch of the Horizon Europe funded project FUEL-UP!

This week, on the 6th and 7th of February, FUEL-UP Consortium gathered in Brussels, hosted by SINTEF, for the project kick-off meeting.

Coordinated by SINTEF, with a consortium of 12 partners from Norway, The Netherlands, Turkey, Czech Republic, Belgium, Germany, Luxembourg and Italy, FUEL-UP aims at producing simultaneously key renewable sustainable and available fuels (#SAF) and #marinefuels from 100% #biogenic feedstock through #pyrolysis and downstream upgrading of pyrolysis oils to #advancedbiofuels, reducing GHG emissions of the aviation and marine transport sectors.

Advanced biofuels are an essential solution for achieving the EU objectives for tackling #climatechange. They can provide 14% of global transport fuel and 45% of global aviation fuel by 2050.

FUEL-UP will validate, at demo scale (TRL7), a route to produce sustainable liquid #biofuels from lignocellulosic streams with 45-50% aviation fuel, 30-35% in the marine diesel range and 20% heavy naphta at TRL7.

HYIELD’s partners have officially kicked off the project to build Europe’s first industrial-scale waste-to-hydrogen plant. The 15.5M€ project, co-financed by Horizon Europe’s Clean Hydrogen Partnership with a 10M€ grant, will run for the next 4 years and involves 16 partners from Spain, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland.

The kick-off meeting, held on the 18th January 2024 in the HQ of WtEnergy Advanced Solutions located in Barcelona, was attended by all partners, along with project and financial officers Luca Feola and Antonio Requena Fernández from the Clean Hydrogen Partnership. The meeting was opened by Alvaro Sanchez, project manager at Magtel, project coordinator, with a presentation of the overall project objectives and workplan. This was followed by a contribution from Luca Feola and Antonio Requena Fernández, who spoke about Clean Hydrogen Partnership role and ambitions for the project within the Horizon Europe’s program. Later, Work Package leaders presented their objectives, tasks and upcoming activities for the next 6 months.

A website, with more information about the HYIELD project, will be launched in the coming months.

Green hydrogen, a product for the future

Green hydrogen is receiving increasing interest in Europe as a route to decarbonising many sectors, including energy intensive industry, aviation, and shipping. Whilst significant attention has been paid to the potential to produce green hydrogen from renewable electricity using electrolysis, very significant potential also lies in Europe’s waste streams. Europe produces around 300 million tons each year, with the potential to produce 30 million tons of green hydrogen, three times Europe’s 2030 target for green hydrogen production. Green hydrogen produced from waste and biomass has been proven extensively at laboratory and pilot scale and several large-scale projects are now under development around the world. The Clean Hydrogen Partnership believes waste-to-hydrogen could offer green hydrogen at lower costs (Levelized Cost of Hydrogen (LCOH)), potentially below 3€/kg, compared with around 5-6€/kg for electrolysis.

The title of HYIELD is “A novel multi-stage steam gasification and syngas purification demonstration plant for waste to hydrogen conversion”. The project aims to build Europe’s first large-scale waste-to-hydrogen demonstration plant that will produce over 400 tonnes of green hydrogen during the project. Our ambition is to develop a robust and efficiency solution that will pave the way for commercial scale-up and replication across Europe, enabling the closure of landfills and production of low-cost green hydrogen in relevant volumes to help decarbonise sectors such as shipping and heavy industry.

The demonstration plant will utilise WtEnergy Advanced Solutions’ CleanTech gasification technology and H2Site membrane separation reactor and will be implemented a CEMEX cement factory in Spain, where the green hydrogen will be utilised in cement production.

The HYIELD consortium comprises 3 research centres, 4 technology developers, 5 industrial end-users, 1 waste manager and 2 specialists. The consortium comprises expertise in waste management, hydrogen, materials science, thermo-chemical process engineering and technology scale-up. Under the coordination of MAGTEL, the HYIELD project consortium is formed by other Spanish partners: WTENERGY ADVANCED SOLUTIONS, H2SITE, CEMEX, VEOLIA, ENAGAS, EURECAT, CETAQUA, INVENIAM GROUP, INSTITUTO DE CARBOQUÍMICA DEL CSIC and LA FARGA; along with MINCATEC ENERGY (France), SINTEF (Norway), ARISTENG (Luxembourg), ARCELORMITTAL (Germany) and SYNHELION (Switzerland).

HYIELD project has been approved for funding in response to the Horizon Europe call “Waste to Hydrogen demonstration plant (HORIZON-JTI-CLEANH2-2023-01-05)”. The call is led by the Clean Hydrogen Partnership (Clean Hydrogen JU), the body that oversees EU funding and R&I activities related to hydrogen, with the objective of supporting the EU Green Deal and Hydrogen Strategy.

EU awards HYIELD Consortium €10 million grant for innovative Waste-to-Green Hydrogen technology

The HYIELD project, co-funded by the European Commission’s Horizon Europe program, aims to develop a new pathway for waste valorisation and green hydrogen production.

A consortium of 16 partners from Spain, France, Luxembourg, Norway, Germany, and Switzerland is putting in place a 15.5M€ investment for a 3MWth demonstration plant.

The demonstration project based on the WtEnergy Advanced Solutions CleanTech gasification technology and H2Site membrane separation system will generate more than 400 tonnes of green hydrogen from waste.

The European Union has awarded HYIELD Consortium a €10 million grant for the R&D to develop a Waste to Hydrogen demonstration plant that, from waste, will allow the production of hydrogen.

Europe currently produces 300 million tonnes of waste with the potential to produce over 30 million tons of green hydrogen. It is this potential that HYIELD aims to unlock. During the 4-year project, novel technologies and processes will be integrated to efficiently and robustly convert biogenic waste streams into high purity green hydrogen at a very competitive cost, to demonstrate its application to help decarbonise different sectors, including shipping, aviation and energy intensive industry.

Under the coordination of MAGTEL, the HYIELD project consortium is formed by other Spanish partners: WtEnergy Advanced Solutions, H2SITE, CEMEX, VEOLIA, ENAGAS, EURECAT, CETAQUA, Inveniam Group, CISC and La Farga; along with MINCATEC ENERGY (France), SINTEF (Norway), ARISTENG (Luxembourg), ArcelorMittal (Germany) and Synhelion (Switzerland).

Representatives of the HYIELD Consortium said: “We are delighted to be a participant of this impactful R&D project that brings together a wide range of skills and experience from across research, tech, energy and heavy industry. We hope the project can open a new low-cost pathway for clean green hydrogen production in Europe, as well as creating new opportunities for waste valorisation and job creation”.

The demonstration scale waste-to-hydrogen plant will be tested at a CEMEX cement factory in Spain. During the project, the plant is expected to process over 2,000t of waste and produce nearly 400t of green hydrogen which will be proved for different industry uses such as clean fuels, fertilizers production, steel industry and others.

The consortium brings to the project experience in waste management, hydrogen production and thermo-chemical processes to address this challenge. Moreover, the project will pave the way for commercial scale-up and replication of waste-to-hydrogen plants across Europe.
