About Me
Georgios (Giorgos) Giannakakis was born in Volos, Greece.
He received his Bachelor and Master’s degree in Chemical Engineering in December 2014 from the Chemical Engineering Department of Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. In September 2015, he joined the Nano Catalysis and Energy Laboratory (NCEL) at Tufts University, to pursue a PhD degree under the supervision of Profs. Maria Flytzani-Stephanopoulos and Charles Sykes. His work focused on the design of atom-precise bimetallic catalysts for selective oxidation and (de)hydrogenation reactions.
In October 2021, Giorgos joined the Advanced Catalysis Engineering (aCe) laboratory in ETH Zurich as a postdoctoral researcher, leading industrial and academic collaborations on heterogeneous catalysis for sustainable pharmaceutical synthesis, CO2 valorization, fine chemicals production, and plastics recycling using advanced operando characterization methods.
Outside academia, Giorgos led technical projects at US-based startups, designing modular chemical synthesis systems for methanol and ammonia production from waste feedstocks (e.g., biogas, biomass) or renewable energy.
